Series 4 Air Date/Episode 1 Synopsis

Series 4 of Doctor Who has now officially confirmed that it will return on Saturday 5th April 2008. Although a time has not yet been revealed, it is expected to air around 7pm. Episode 1 which is entitled Partners In Crime see’s Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) reunited with The Doctor (David Tennant). The show returns this Spring for a fourth series, and will encore as four specials in 2009 before returning for a fifth full series in 2010. While there has been no official comment on the future of Doctor Who beyond that, Davies reveals that the establishment of this transmission pattern will help to ensure the show's longevity.

"Doctor Who is now one of the BBC's biggest flagship shows," he tells the magazine. "And this sort of pattern will guarantee it being on air for twenty years. It's no good looking at that American pattern of making seven years if you're lucky - that's just not going to work. Who wants it to die after seven years? It's much bigger than that. It needs looking after, in the sense that it needs pauses, it needs its legend revamping every so often. If you build these pauses in now and say this will always happen, that's part of the plan now - it's literally a twenty year plan, which can't be guaranteed, because different people will be in charge in years to come - but if you present them with something rock solid, that is working, and has a unique transmission pattern that shouldn't be interfered with, then it will stay.

"In the interview Davies also tackles such topics as the casting of Catherine Tate, the rise of the online critic and the true story behind the return of Billie Piper. In addition, he confirms that UNIT, the fictional military organisation returning to the show in the new series, is now the Unified Intelligence Taskforce, and not the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce as it was previously known.

The Doctor, upsets some cinema goers . . . .

Over at ICWales.co.uk, reports have come in over the cinema advertising for Doctor Who's Series 4. Apparently the BBC with its advertising campaign for the show, have spent close to £500,000 promoting the award-winning series to movie goers. Many disgruntled licence payers have now attacked the BBC over this move, stating that it is a waste of money.

A fair enough call really, the show is one of the highest rated programs in the UK. So why is this a necessary expense? Surely with the series in its current winning position, that money could be better utilized elsewhere. An additional episode, a longer Christmas Special or just simply more special effects come to my mind at least.

A viewer expressed his disgust at the spending, after contacting the BBC Radio 4 Feedback show stating "The BBC budget was meant for programming not advertising" and that "these budgets are already under pressure". Jackie Brandreth head of brand at the BBC, has defended this spending. Stating that the corporation always spent a small proportion on its “off air” activities, and that this was an attempt to reach younger audiences. Jackie also said, “The cinema is a pilot project to assess whether this is a good medium to talk to these younger audiences.”

A BBC spokesman said the cinema project had cost less than £500,000. How much less I guess we really all wonder now, £499,999.99? What are your feelings on the matter? Series 4 Updates

Two new promotional images for series 4 of Doctor Who have now been released. These images are off The Doctor And Donna inside the Tardis. These two images have been revealed on the Official Doctor Who Site which has recently been updated. Both of these images can be seen below.
In other news thanks to Doctor Who Magazine we now know that Series 4 of Doctor Who will air in April 2008. The exact date is still to be confirmed but it is expected to be the 5th or 12th April. Doctor Who Magazine has also now revealed that episode 8 of Doctor Who will be entitled Silence In The Library.

Major Changes?

Sci Fi Pulse is currently claiming that some major changes are on the way for Doctor Who and Torchwood. These changes effect both of these shows greatly and in my own eyes seem like very stupid ideas and cannot be completely believed until there is a confirmation by the BBC. The website claims that both Burn Gorman (Owen) and Naoko Mori (Tosh) will be leaving Torchwood for its third series. John Barrowman (Captain Jack) will also be stepping down, and will return to the show but only 'in a recurring capacity'. Freema Agyeman (Martha) will make her final appearance in Doctor Who in Series Four and will be returning to Torchwood full time for Series 3.A third series of Torchwood has been commissioned, but currently only 5 episodes have been confirmed. These changes in the format mean that the third series of Torchwood will be able to be shown in a Saturday night slot, usually occupied by Doctor Who, and producers are looking to Torchwood to act as a buffer between the main series of Doctor Who.Now onto Doctor Who, and there is a very good reason why Catherine Tate (Donna) is leaving after just one series. Much like Martha, her exit has been planned right from the off, though the big difference is Donna will turn out to be a pretty nasty piece of work, which is why the finale features the return of Captain Jack, Sarah Jane Smith, Martha Jones and Rose Tyler.In addition, the website claims that David Tennant will be leaving the series and that the Doctor will regenerate during the last few minutes of the 2009 Christmas Special. Apparently, for the last few months. filming has been well underway on the four specials, the first of which will be the 2008 Christmas Special followed by two specials in the year and ending with the 2009 Christmas special, which is in its final six weeks of production now. This means that Tennant will have 'officially' left the series in just two weeks time, when he finishes filming the final moments of the 2009 Christmas Special.

A new Series 4 Promo image has now been released by the BBC. This image features The Doctor And Donna in The Fires Of Pompeii episode. This picture appeared on the BBC Shop Website as an image for the Series 4 box set. This particular image can be seen below.

Series 4 Script Leak

Two Doctor Who scripts have recently leaked out to the press. Although we do not know what happens in these episodes The Sun claims that (highlight to view):

Episodes nine and ten form a two-parter, which is due to be screened in early summer.
They see the Doctor and sidekick Donna Noble – played by Catherine Tate – ending up in the 51st Century in a giant library, “a whole planet of books”, that’s been abandoned for 100 years.
Ironically the library contains many books that give away SPOILERS about people’s life stories.
ER star Alex Kingston also stars as an astronaut-cum-archaeologist called Professor River Song. The library is full of sinister things such as dead bodies, “data ghosts”, the Suit Creature and the dreaded Vashta Nerada “piranhas of the air – shadows that melt the flesh”.
In later scenes, the Doc and Donna get separated and she ends up in a mysterious hospital where she meets another Doctor – Doctor Moon.
All the while she is trying to work out what is going on and what has happened to her Doctor

The Invasion Of Time DVD Update

The forthcoming Fourth Doctor story The Invasion Of Time which will be released on DVD has now revealed it will include CGI effects as optional extra’s. 33 effects have now been passed by the British Board of Film Classification which consists of three for episode one, five for episode two, five for episode three, nine for episode four, three for episode five, and eight for episode six. As well as these extras the DVD will include some mini documentaries and also features entitled The Elusive David Agnew and The Rise and Fall of Gallifrey. Furthermore The Invasion Of Time DVD will include a making of documentary called Out Of Time plus an Easter Egg. The date of release for The Invasion Of Time is still yet to be released.

Verity Lambert Tribute Night

The newspaper the Guardian has recently confirmed that BBC Four is planning a tribute night to Verity Lambert who was Doctor Who’s first producer who sadly died last year. This evening will feature a new documentary looking back at Verity’s work including her major role in setting up Doctor Who. This evening is expected to air in April 2008.

Pest Control Cover Released

Judoon To Return?

Thanks to Whoviannet we now have word that the Judoon are possibly returning to Doctor Who in Series 4. The Doctor Who Exhibition In Cardiff now has a sign up where the Judoon props were claiming, the props had recently been shipped back off to the BBC to use for filming for Series Four, and that they would be returning shortly. Could this mean that we are to see the Judoon once again in Series 4 well I guess we are going to have to wait and find out.

Recently Bad Wolf PR reported that the cover for The Five Doctors 25th Anniversary Edition had been released. Now the inner cover of this DVD has also been released. Below is a brief description of this DVD:

All five Doctors (Peter Davison, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Richard Hurndall and Tom Baker) and many of their old companions are taken out of time and deposited in the Death Zone on Gallifrey.There they must battle not only the Master, but Daleks, Cybermen and Yeti in order to reach the Dark Tower and discover the Tomb of Rassilon. This special edition includes new special effects and extra footage not included in the original broadcast.

Thanks to the latest Doctor Who Magazine a brand new episode name for Doctor Who Series 4 has been announced. The episode name revealed is episode two entitled The Fires Of Pompeii. This episode will be the Pompeii episode where some of which was filmed in Rome. It has also now been confirmed that the episode Midnight will be episode 10 of Series 4.

Phil Collinson Heads For Manchester

Phil Collinson, Producer of Doctor Who, suggested in a chistmas special podcast that he would be leaving Doctor Who after finishing Series 4. This has now been confirmed as he is moving to BBC Manchester to be Head Of Drama for the region. In Phil's new job he will be responsible for developing links with regional talent, on sceen and off screen, aswell as contributing to shows to the overall BBC drama scedule. Here is what the Official Doctor Who Site had to say:

"Phil has been the secret hero of Doctor Who for the past four years, and we'll miss him more than I can say," noted Russell T Davies, executive producer and lead writer of Doctor Who. "But the most exciting thing about this new job is that so many more producers, writers and actors will get to work with him. I envy them."

"The four years I've spent producing Doctor Who in Cardiff have been incredibly rewarding," said Phil. "The chance to return home to Manchester though and start something completely new, is irresistible. Manchester has always been an amazing centre for excellence in drama production and the chance to establish a formal BBC drama base there, and build on the massive range of local talent, is incredibly exciting. I'm thrilled and honoured to be charged with this task."

Peter Salmon, chief creative officer for the BBC's Vision Productions noted: "Phil Collinson is a terrific addition to a brilliant top team working on in-house drama throughout the UK. BBC drama production will play a substantial role at the new BBC centre at Mediacity:uk through Phil and his team."

New Doctor Who Series Four Trailer!

Doctor Who has Returned to Our Screens Today! Well not our Television Screens but our Big Screens with a New Ninety Second Trailer featuring Clips from Most of the Series. Luckily for the Who Fans who cant go to a Odeon, Cineworld and Empire Cinema Branch the Trailer has been uploaded to Youtube. The Trailer has not got the Best Quality I must Admit but it is still very Amazing.

In the Trailer we see more Shots of the Ood and the Sontarans. At the Start we also get a Short, Sweet Conversation between Donna and Bernard Cribbins who was last Seen in the Recent Christmas Special Voyage of the Damned trying to sell Newspapers in the City of London despite the Fact that everyone had gone to the Country besides the Queen. We also see Shots of the Giant Wasp which will Appear in the Unicorn and the Wasp, a Hand rising from the Water, Unit and a Snow Covered Planet which will most likely be the Ood Planet. Also to top it off at the End a Single shot of Martha Jones played by Freema Agyeman and then Rose Tyler played by Billie Piper. No scenes of Sarah Jane Smith played by Elisabeth Sladen or Captain Jack Harkness have been shown in the Trailer despite them Both making a Possible return to the Fourth Series of Doctor Who.

Series 4 Cinema Trailer

From February 1st a new 90 second trailer for Doctor Who Series 4 will be shown in cinemas across the UK. Naomi Gibney, the head of marketing at BBC Vision had this to say:

"This is a great opportunity for the BBC to reach new audiences with an exciting preview of the new series of Doctor Who."

According To Digital Spy this trailer will run in Empire, Odeon and Cineworld venues. During December 2007 trailers for Voyage Of The Damned were also shown in many cinemas for the christmas special.

DOCTOR WHO has been sold for German viewers and will be re-dubbed into German, BBC Worldwide have announced today. They have done a deal with broadcaster ProSieben, which has licensed the first two series.

The character of Rose will be voiced by Maren Rainer. Maren has previously provided Scarlett Johansson's voice for the hit movie "Lost In Translation", when it was released in Germany. Frank Roth will voice the ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston), in the dubbed version. A voice for the tenth Doctor (David Tennant), is yet to be announced.

Isabelle Helle of BBC Worldwide said: “The show has gone to 16 countries. We are excited German viewers can enjoy the Time Lord’s adventures.”

Sarah Jane Is Back?

For those who wish to not be spoiled for Doctor Who Series 4 I suggest you look away now.

Yesterday Bad Wolf PR reported that John Barrowman who plays Captain Jack Harkness will be returning to Doctor Who for Series 4. There has also been speculation to whether Elizabeth Sladen, who plays Sarah Jane Smith, will be returning in Series 4. Well now we have even more proof of this thanks to her recent interview with SFX Magazine. Here is what Elizabeth had to say:

“You must know how many people are in it," she says, referring to the number of special guests from the Doctor’s (recent) past who, it's been confirmed, will be making reappearances alongside Sarah Jane.

"So I don't think I'll be at the centre of things. I would think it would be apportioned off, a bit here a bit there, and the major people will be the Doctor and Donna. That is my take on it. We are coming back to reinforce an already established team. So I don’t think I’ll be leading the group, if you know what I mean! I think there will be a distinct kind of sectioning and apportioning off. Because you can only do so much with so many people."

This interview seems to confirm the rumours that their will be a all star finale with some of the Doctor's companions. Remember though it hasn't been confirmed which episode she will be in, so it could or could not be the finale.

Captain Jack Is Back?

Well thanks to John Barrowman's newly released autobiography it has been confirmed in his recording schedule that he will be in Doctor Who Series 4. John Barrowman is currently starring in the Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood which is being shown weekly at 9.00pm on BBC 2. Although we do not know which episode he will be appearing in be sure that Bad Wolf PR will update you on this as soon as we hear it.

The BBC Press Office has now revealed that the actors Alex Kingston and Colin Salmon will both appear in Series 4 of Doctor Who. Alex will play a character called River Song however Colin's character is still yet to be revealed. These two will both appear in Steven Moffat's two part story which is currently being filmed by the BBC. Alex Kingston has previously appeared in the television drama series E.R. Colin's has previously appeared in many films including the James Bond films Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day: He also appeared in the first Alien Vs Predator film .
